When a toothache happens to you, where will you turn?
A toothache wasn’t exactly what you had in mind when you woke up this morning. While you might just want to ignore it and hope it goes away, the fact of the matter is that this problem needs to be treated immediately! Fortunately, the expert dental team at San Ramon Family Dental provides emergency dentistry right here in San Ramon, CA. So, when dental pain has impacted you, you know exactly where to turn!
Why am I in pain?
A toothache is definitely trying to let you know that something is wrong, which is why simply ignoring it isn’t a good option. A toothache is often a sign of a cavity, which will continue to spread further into the tooth until you get the emergency dentistry you need. Luckily, here at our San Ramon, CA, practice, we are able to easily remove decay and restore teeth with beautiful tooth-colored fillings.
Of course, decay isn’t the only reason for a toothache. Your tooth could be hurting due to,
- Excessive teeth grinding
- Gum disease
- A dental infection (often an infected dental pulp, which will require a root canal)
- An abscess
- Trauma (e.g. crack; fracture)
What can I do to ease my discomfort?
We know that dental pain can be excruciating. While you are waiting to get to our practice for care, there are some simple things you can do to make the pain more bearable until you can turn to us for care. Some ways to temporarily ease a toothache include,
- Taking a pain reliever such as aspirin or ibuprofen
- Applying a topical dental anesthetic to the gums around the tooth (you can easily find this at your drugstore)
- Applying an ice pack to the side of the face, especially if you notice facial swelling
While doing these things can certainly improve your dental pain, keep in mind that they are not designed to fix the problem. Only our dental team is able to do that.
